The passenger list for the ship Westphalia, which left Hamburg, Germany on March 29, 1885 and arrived in New York City on April 13, includes the following: Maria Pelikan, age 28 years, wife, from Liskov, Bohemia, and her daughter, Franziska, age 2. According to the 1900 census she was a widow, born January 1850 (but the census also states she was 40 years old which is inconsistent with a birth date... Married (2) Joseph Cerny on December 8, 1902 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Otoupalik in David City, Nebr. by a County Judge. Her probate file states she died August 26, 1929 and was survived by her husband Joseph Cerny of David City, Nebr., and children Alfred Pelikan, Addington, Okla., Joseph Pelikan, Shawnee, Okla., Frantiska Cerny [sic], David City, Mary Cerny, Addington, Okla., and Emma Witkowski, Council Bluffs, Ia. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church, David City, at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28. Joe Blei, Albert Blei, Frank Humpal, Frank Kindler, Fred Miller and Henry Sabata were pallbearers. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, David City.
