ARTHUR GOWIN DIES AT 72 YEARS Mrs. Arthur Gowin of Dexter, a former resident of Winterset, died Feb. 22 at Mercedes, Tex., where she and her husband were vacationing this winter. She was 72 years of age. Mrs. Gowin was the former Marie Ruth, daughter of Alex and Harriet McDonald Ruth. She was born at Muscatine on Sept. 3, 1898. As a child, she came with her family to Winterset, where her early life was spent. As a young woman she taught school in Sioux City, Seattle, Wash., and at Arthur and Ackley in Iowa. She was married to Arthur Gowin on July 22, 1926, in Chicago, where they lived for three years. They lived in Bettendorf for 25 years before moving to Winterset, and later to Dexter. Mrs. Gowin served as a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross for many years, with over 7,000 hours of volunteer work in hospitals to her credit. She was a member of the Kings Daughters in Bettendorf and was active in the Order of Eastern Star, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the American Legion auxiliary. She was a member of the United Presbyterian church. Funeral services were held last Thursday from the United Presbyterian church in Dexter with burial in the McDonald cemetery northwest of Winterset. Transcribed as published by Karen Brewer. Note: Although the obituary states Mrs. Gowin died in Mercedes, the death certificate has listed the place of death as Weslaco.
