She was born on 11/4/1927 to Herbert and Rena (Huxtable) Firme in Hastings, NE and grew up on farms in Adams and Clay County. She was born on 11/4/1927 to Herbert and Rena (Huxtable) Firme in Hastings, NE and grew up on farms in Adams and Clay County. In 1945 she graduated from Sutton High School and moved to Lincoln and worked as a secretary. She married Kenneth P. Ackermann on 9/7/1948 in Sutton. They lived in Wahoo, Geneva, and Utica during the course of Ken's career in secondary education. Mary was a homemaker but she also worked as a secretary for Wahoo Elementary School and John F. Kennedy College. She was employed for several years at May's Hallmark and the Martin Luther Home in York. In her spare time, Mary loved plants and gardened extensively every summer which led to wonderful canned tomatoes and pickles. She applied her green thumb to her ever growing collection of house plants, particularly varieties of cactus. She also enjoyed quilting and made several quilts. She collected pine cones to make into Christmas wreaths and was always on the lookout for trees that could yield a new kind of pine cone. She loved backyard birds and always kept track of the visitors to their birdfeeders. After Ken retired they moved to Lincoln. She became an active member at Christ United Methodist Church and enjoyed attending Kiwanis related events with Ken. During retirement, Ken and Mary traveled all over the United States attending more than 20 Elderhostels, and taking several of Good Life Tours. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Women's Board of BryanLGH West, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Wahoo Extension Club. Mary is survived by Ken, her husband of 62 years, her son, Sam Ackermann, and grandson, David Ackermann of Omaha, her daughter Noelie Ackermann Sherdon of Lincoln, her brother Donovan Firme of Ventura, CA, and sister-in-laws Geraldine Firme of Haxtun, CO, Geraldine Ackermann of Geneva, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harold Firme, her sister Ruth Louise Hertel, and in-laws, Bill Hertel, Audrey Firme, Esther Ackermann, Marlys Ackermann, Armin Ackermann, Ray Ackermann, Walt and Annetta Trautman, and son-in-law Herb Sherdon. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 4530 A Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church or Capital City Kiwanis Club. Arrangements are through Butherus, Maser, and Love Funeral Home. (bmlfh.com/obituary)
