Description	:	Ken Ackermann left this world peacefully on March 25, 2016, after a short illness. He was born on August 6, 1925, to Peter and Rosalia (Ullman) Ackermann in Sutton where he grew up. After graduation from high school he worked for the railroad for a short time before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. He served as a pharmacist 3rd class and treated the wounded at the Iwo Jima and Okinawa battles and at Nagasaki. He was a witness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. He was born on August 6, 1925, to Peter and Rosalia (Ullman) Ackermann in Sutton where he grew up. After graduation from high school he worked for the railroad for a short time before enlisting in the Navy in 1943. He served as a pharmacist 3rd class and treated the wounded at the Iwo Jima and Okinawa battles and at Nagasaki. He was a witness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Ken was proud of his military service. He loved the honor flight he took to Washington, D.C., for WWII veterans. After the war Ken enrolled at the University of Nebraska on the G.I. Bill. He earned a BA in education. He played football and then became a scout for the Husker football program before graduation. He began his career as a coach and history teacher at Wahoo High School and then Geneva before returning to Wahoo. He earned a MA in school administration and became the high school principal at Wahoo and then Centennial High School until he retired. During his life he belonged to the Lions and Kiwanis, the American Legion, and participated in several professional organizations including the Nebraska School Activities Association and the Nebraska and National Secondary School Principals Associations. Ken married the love of his life, Marietta Catherine Firme, in 1948 in Sutton. After Ken's retirement they moved to Lincoln where Ken was an active member of Kiwanis and Christ United Methodist Church. During his life Ken was a sports fan (especially Cornhusker football), and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. Ken and Mary visited 49 of the 50 states during their travels to many elderhostels. They were happily married for 62 years until her death. At his 90th birthday party last August, Ken loved seeing old friends and family members who came and enjoyed the many cards he received. It was an awesome day. Ken is survived by his daughter, Noelie Sherdon, Lincoln, son, Sam Ackermann, Omaha, and grandson, David Ackermann, Omaha, and in-laws Geraldine Firme, Haxtun, Colo., and Geraldine Ackermann, Geneva, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Mary, his parents, and siblings Annetta Trautman, Armin Ackermann, Ray Ackermann, Esther Ackermann, Marlys Ackermann, son-in-law Herbert J. Sherdon and in-laws Harold Firme, William and Louise Hertel, Don and Audrey Firme, and Walter Trautman. His family sincerely thanks the CountryHouse staff who cared so well for Ken in his last years. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4530 A Street, Lincoln. Memorials to Christ United Methodist Church or Capital City Kiwanis Club.
