Description	:	Marilyn Kay (nee Meyer) Folkers was born June 25, 1940 at the Meyer family farm four miles north of Rosebud, S. D. to William and Vernice (nee Jewell) Meyer. She suffered a stroke August 14, 2014 and passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, SD, one week later, on August 21, 2014. She suffered a stroke August 14, 2014 and passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, SD, one week later, on August 21, 2014. Marilyn was baptized and confirmed at Church of Jesus (Episcopal) in Rosebud, S. D. She attended school at Mission, SD, graduated from Todd County High School in 1958, attended Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S. D and later obtained training in floral design. While young, she and her sisters stayed in the top floor apartment of the former Red & White Store in downtown Mission during cold winter months, thus assuring they wouldn't miss school. Her parents owned Starlite Theatre in Mission for many years, and Marilyn helped her family with business duties connected to showing weekly movies to the public. Beginning around age nine, Marilyn helped the priests who came to serve the Rosebud Mission of the Episcopal Church. Over the years, she recorded baptisms, marriages and deaths; cleaned the interiors of the church buildings; set up and took down altar cloths; washed and ironed church linens; reminded the priests to order wafers and wine when supplies became low; cleaned floors and furniture; placed hymn and prayer books in pews; delivered messages and served her church in many other ways. As an adult, she was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Mission, SD, serving as President of Trinity Ladies Guild, Junior Warden and janitor. She was frequently the entire Altar Guild, again seeing to appropriate altar cloths and hangings; laundering and ironing altar linens; keeping a stock of wafers and wine; cleaning and maintaining priests' robes and clothing for church services and more voluntary duties. As ladies guild president, Marilyn, with help from members, organized meetings, church suppers, rummage and bake sales, funeral luncheons, meals during bishop's visits, etc., often loaning or donating her personal kitchenware for the church's use. As janitor, she cleaned church floors and furniture; maintained a steady fuel supply for heating the church; maintained a set of keys for church officers and others to use when holding services and meetings; made hundreds of trips from home to the church to turn the furnace up each winter Saturday evening for Sunday morning services or to open the church for meetings, funerals and other needs; maintained Trinity Church's cemetery book; helped see to maintenance of Trinity Cemetery's physical improvements and more. Her family mowed the church lawn, helped with roof repairs and did other duties to maintain the church building and surrounding property for use by priests and members. She was a tireless volunteer and contributed considerable time to her church until her husband passed away, when she was left to operate the family businesses with their sons and daughter-in-law. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Cemetery committee, secretary/treasurer of Antelope Senior Citizen Center since 1977, member of the Bishop Harold Jones Building committee in 2001 and was a member of the Mission Chamber of Commerce. Marilyn was a long-time Mission businesswoman. With her husband, she owned and operated the Home Cafe (renaming it Starlite Cafe) and Starlite Theatre, beginning in 1966. Ten years later, in 1976, their business evolved into Starlite Snack Shop and Starlite Flowers & Gifts, which served the wider reservation community with corsages, boutonnieres, flower arrangements and bouquets for graduations, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, funerals and special church and community events. She also became an Avon dealer and sold beauty products from 1976 to the present time, and her store offered a variety of gifts, greeting cards, jewelry, native beadwork and memorabilia to Rosebud Reservation citizens and tourists alike. After graduating, she met her future husband, Lester H. Folkers, Sr., a U. S. Army veteran, at the Montgomery Ward Store in Yankton, S. D. They were married at Yankton on October 6, 1961. To this union, three sons were born, Harlan Lester, Bradley Dean and Lester Harlan, Jr., all of whom served their country in the U. S. Marine Corps. Harlan, Brad and Brad's wife, Mandi, also a Marine Corps veteran, live in Mission and gradually assumed interest in Starlite Snack Shop and Starlite Flower & Gifts. Jr. is employed with Golden West Telecommunications, Wall, SD. A memorial service to celebrate Marilyn’s life was held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Trinity Episcopal Church. Immediately following services, a meal was shared at the Bishop Harold Jones Building in southwest Mission. Private inurnment of both her and her husband's cremains will be held at a later date. Marilyn is survived by three sons, Harlan and Bradley (Mandi) of Mission, S. D. and Lester Jr., Wall, S. D.; three stepchildren, Steven, Marilyn and Rick, Black River Falls, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Bradley, Summer, Justin, Camren, Gavin, Kaylee and Ashley; thirteen step-grandchildren, Ryan, Tracy, Mike, Jeremy, Mark, Grace, Todd, Allison, David, Leaf, Star, Sky and Sage; six great- grandchildren, Jayden, Destiny, Gabby, Ava, Raygan and Deason and sixteen step-great-grandchildren, Sylvia, Mikey, Jennifer, Dallas, Alyssa, Roxy, Richard, Ashley, Jessica, McKenzie, Anmariah, Max, Hope, Tiara, Azairia, and Jonathon. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Maxine Meyer, Mission, S. D. and a brother-in-law, Chuck Davis, Anchorage, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Folkers, Sr.; an adopted son, Justin Snow Fly; her parents; one brother, Delvin Meyer, Mission, S. D.; two sisters, Lola Hall of Vivian and, later, Hill City, S. D., Lurene Davis, Anchorage, Alaska and Lurene's twin sister, who died in infancy; a brother-in-law Cliff Hall, Vivian and Hill City, and one still-born infant brother.
