Whenever my grandmother (Lillie Helen Burnside) spoke of her mother, Marinda, it always struck me that she felt a certain air of reverence toward her mother, and that reverence showed up in the tone of her voice. Whenever my grandmother (Lillie Helen Burnside) spoke of her mother, Marinda, it always struck me that she felt a certain air of reverence toward her mother, and that reverence showed up in the tone of her voice. Marinda was born on 5 Jun 1881, in Shoestring, Lewis County, Washington, the sixth of at least twelve children born to Richard Colville Parnell (1834-1912), born in Kentucky, and his second wife, Sarah Catherine Shafer/Shaffer (1853-1919), born in Ohio, following their marriage on 6 Jan 1872 (possibly in Ohio). Richard and Sarah, migrated to Lewis County, Washington, where they had their first child just a little more than a year and a half after they were married. Over the first five decades of my life, I formed an impression of Marinda as having been a quiet, fairly serious child with a pleasing countenance and kind manner. I can't really point to any one particular thing that gave me that impression. Rather, it was the result of decades of conversations (that I was privileged to listen to) between my grandmother, Lillie, and her then-living sisters, Pansy, Myrtle, Rose, and Marguerite about the life they led during the early 1900s and their recollections of family life as children. One of their favorite family stories was how Marinda decided at a very young age that she wanted to marry Robert Benjamin Burnside and apparently told him as much. He told her that he was much too old for her, as there was a twenty-year difference in their ages. But Marinda insisted. So, Robert told her that he would wait for her to grow up. And he did. Marinda and Robert were married on 25 December 1898 -- quite a Christmas gift for them both -- when she was 17 1/2 years old. Marinda and Robert's first child was born in December of the following year. In all, they had nine children before Marinda's untimely death just one day after their ninth child was born. It was a tragedy for the family, as Marinda had contracted a virulent strain of epidemic flu virus at the end of her pregnancy, and it cost her and the baby, whom she named Iris, their lives. Marinda's sudden and unexpected passing on 1 Nov 1918 left a deep mark on all of her children, and they carried it throughout their lives. Marinda and Robert's children were: Emmett Ray Burnside (1899-1962) James William Burnside (1901-1965) Pansy May Burnside (1903-1999) Lillie Helen Burnside (1905-1999) Daisy Elsie Burnside (1906-1931) Myrtle Esther Burnside (1909-1986) Rose Stella Burnside (1914-2001) Marguerite Anna Burnside (1916-2006) Iris Burnside (1918-1918) The two oldest boys, Emmett and James, were in their late teens when Marinda passed away, and they went over to Onalaska to work at the sawmill. Pansy, Lillie, and Daisy stayed on the farm and carried on, as their father expected, with their own and their mother's chores of cooking, cleaning, doing laundry on an old washboard with well water, and even plowing the field because Robert was no longer really well after Marinda's death. Reluctantly, Robert sent the three youngest, Myrtle, Rose, and Marguerite to live with other families. But the older sisters pushed their father to bring their sisters back home to live with the family, and they were all eventually reunited. Daisy had health problems and passed away at age 24, to the dismay of her father, sisters, and brothers. It was another painful memory that my grandmother carried with her for a lifetime, and I could tell that she loved Daisy very much. Emmett and James(my great uncles) passed away before I graduated high school, and I really didn't get to know them. However, I got to know my grandmother's sisters and very much enjoyed spending time with all of them whenever they got together. They each loved handcrafts, cooking, and/or gardening and taught me a lot about each one. When we were all together, we talked about our family history, and Marinda, Iris, and Daisy were always on everyone's minds and mentioned in the conversations. It was always a poignant, usually unspoken thought that Marinda had been buried with Iris in her arms and that Robert, who loved Marinda so much, had seen to it himself. I don't think a day went by without a reverent thought or two being sent their way by someone in the family. And that deep sentiment continues to this day, as one of my cousins, who is deeply involved in our family's genealogy research, named his daughter Marinda. Just thinking of Marinda brings forth my own poignant memories of afternoons and evenings spent with my grandmother and her sisters, listening as they talked about their own family memories. Such is the power of the love that Marinda brought to her children's lives, and it never left them.
