Description	:	OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Marion Howard Alexander, age 90, of Oak Ridge, died Friday morning, Oct. 7, 2001, at the National Health Care facility in Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 1973; and her eldest son, Marty, in 2004. She is survived by her younger son, James (Jake), daughter-in-law, Kathleen, granddaughter, Sarah Alexander, and Sarah's husband, Aaron Marsh, all of Oak Ridge; and a grandson, Craig, of Jeffersonville, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 1973; and her eldest son, Marty, in 2004. She is survived by her younger son, James (Jake), daughter-in-law, Kathleen, granddaughter, Sarah Alexander, and Sarah's husband, Aaron Marsh, all of Oak Ridge; and a grandson, Craig, of Jeffersonville, Pa. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Fran, and Fran's daughter, Michele Korray, of Madison, Ala. Her closest friend and companion in her final years of life was Bill ("Will") Fort, of Oak Ridge. Marion was born in Plymouth, Mich., in 1921 and grew up with her mother and two older sisters in Hudson, Ind., a small farm community north of Fort Wayne. She graduated from high school at age 16 and was enrolled at Purdue University in 1939, where she met her future husband. Marion and Lloyd and their two small children moved to Oak Ridge in 1952, where Dr. Alexander taught at the Oak Ridge Institute for Nuclear Studies. During her early years in Oak Ridge, Marion became active in the League of Women Voters, serving as President of the Oak Ridge Chapter for several years in the late 1950s. She and her family were also active in the Oak Ridge Unitarian Church, where she served as president of the congregation for several years. After both her boys were in school, Marion completed work on a master's degree at the University of Tennessee and began her career as an English teacher with the Oak Ridge Schools. She taught at Robertsville Junior High School from 1964 through 1967, and then moved to Oak Ridge High School, where she taught until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the ORHS "combined studies" team, and taught a popular science fiction literature course for many years. After retirement from ORHS, Marion continued to support numerous volunteer and community organizations in Oak Ridge. She was one of the founders of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL) in 1997, where she taught a class in creative writing on several occasions, and participated in several book groups. A memorial service to celebrate Marion's long and productive life will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, located at the corner of the Oak Ridge Turnpike and Robertsville Road. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church (www.oruuc.org) or the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation (www.orpsef.org).
