J CHEATHAM TAKEN SUDDENLY BY HEART STROKE FORMER DISTRICT ATTORNEY DIES TUESDAY NIGHT AT FAMILY HOME Tehama County, Tuesday night, lost one of its most widely known and respected citizens in the passing of Marion Judson Cheatham 62, who had spent practically all of his years since reaching manhood in the public service. Death came about 7:40 o'clock from a heart attack with which he was stricken while carrying some wood from the shed at the rear of the family home at 1115 Jackson Street. Death from this cause was not entirely unexpected as he had been under the care of a physician for heart trouble for a number of years, and in recent months has suffered several severe attacks from the ailment. Funeral Services Friday – The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Baptist church with the Masonic Lodge in charge. Rev J. F. Blodgett will officiate. The deceased was a native of the Henleyville district where he was born March 2, 1873, the son of the late William Daniel and Mary J. Cheatham, who were among the early settlers of that community. His mother passed away upon his birth. Served As Teacher – Marion Cheatham received is education in the Red Bluff schools and at the state normal college at Shasta City. Upon leaving school he entered upon his public service, first as a school teacher in the Paskenta and Elk Creek districts. Later he took up the study of law in San Francisco and upon passing the bar examination entered practice in Red Bluff in 1903. He was married on June 8, 1904 to Florence Belle Stanton, and to them were born two children, Elvin of this city, and Rachel. The first Mrs. Cheatham passed away September 15, 1923. On February 2, 1929, he was married to Bessie Jordan. She survives him. Red Bluff Postmaster – In 1911 during the administration of President Taft, he became postmaster here and served one term, retiring from the office in 1915. Four years later he was elected as district attorney, holding the office until 1923. In 1926 he was appointed United States Commissioner for this district, serving until 1931 when he was elected as district attorney. He completed that term last January and again entered private practice. Active in Lodge – In addition to his public service, Cheatham has also been active in the affairs of Vesper Lodge No. 81, F. & A. M. of which he had been secretary for several years. In addition to the widow and two children, the deceased also leaves four nephews, D. C. Riley and Ernest Linebaugh, of Willows, and Dan B. Linebaugh of Sacramento. There are also two step-sons C. R. Jordan of El Centro, and H. W. Jordan of Hamilton City.
