Monroe of Latta Passes Monday Marion McKay Monroe, 73, Dillon County farmer and land surveyor, died Monday (November 30) morning at the St. Eugene Hospital in Dillon following an illness of a few months. He had been gravely ill since Tuesday. Mr. Monroe was born in Latta, son of the late Dr. F. M. and Carolyn Lewis Monroe. He was a member of the Dalcho Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and was a past master. An elder of long standing in the Latta Presbyterian Church, he had served a number of years as superintendent of the Sunday School and was teacher of the Adult Bible Class. He did extensive farming and at the time of his death was Dillon County's only land surveyor. He was Latta's best informed man on its history, having grown up with the town. Surviving include his widow, Mrs. Martha Goddard Monroe; one son, James G. Monroe of Latta; one daughter, Mrs. Peter M. Mitchell of Arlington, Va; three sisters, Mrs. Annie M. Baker, Miss Elizabeth G. Monroe and Mrs. Carrie M. Epps of Latta, and two grandchildren. Funerals services were conducted at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church by his pastor, the Rev. A. M. Simpson. Burial followed in Magnolia cemetery.
