Description	:	KEARNEY — Marjorie L. Sundquist, 93, of Kearney died Monday, June 9, 2014, at Mother Hull Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rebecca McDermott officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Home Cemetery near Holdrege. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements. She was born July 12, 1920, in Holdrege to Elmer and Minnie (Larson) Sundquist. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends. She was the third of five children. She grew up in rural Holdrege. Marjorie received her primary education at School District 26 in Phelps County and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1938. Marjorie then went on to earn her teaching certificate from Nebraska State Teachers College in 1940. Marjorie spent four years teaching at Paxton and Curtis and then became one of the first female teachers for Father Flanagan's Boys Town. During the summer, Marjorie also worked for Western Union Telegraph Co. and Boeing Aircraft Co. In 1945, Marjorie moved to Arlington, Va., where she began her career as a cryptologist with the Department of Defense National Security Agency where she worked for 45 years. Marjorie continued to live in the Washington, D.C., area until she returned to live in Kearney in 2002. During her career and retirement, Marjorie continued to pursue her love of art and attended the Maryland Institute of Art for many years and received her accumulative Ph.D. She loved to travel to different countries. Her most favorite was the months that she spent in Greece. Marjorie found that she could combine her love of travel and learning by taking many excursions with the Elderhostel association. Marjorie was a Phoenix Society Life Member. She was baptized and confirmed at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk and later transferred her membership to St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md., and then to First Lutheran Church in Kearney. Marjorie's love of paintings was halted when she developed macular degeneration. Marjorie continued to appreciate nature and was a strong advocate of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Milford Sundquist and his wife, Bessie, Tannis Sundquist and his wife, Evelyn, and Clinton Sundquist and his wife, Dorothy; and sister, Loretta at age 5.
