Lake Poinsett, SD ~ Marlene Long, 71, longtime resident of Valley Springs, SD died Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospital. Services will begin at 10:30 AM Saturday, November 5, 2005 at Arlington United Methodist Church in Arlington, SD with interment at 3:45 PM Saturday at Pleasant Lawn Cemetery in Geddes, SD. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, November 4, at George Boom Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 7:30 PM with a Public Order of the Eastern Star Service beginning at 7:30 PM. Memorials may be given to the Arlington United Methodist Church or the Geddes United Methodist Church. Marlene (Mackenstadt) Long, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Munneke) Mackenstadt, was born June 23, 1934 at Platte, SD. She attended country school and Geddes Elementary then graduated from Geddes High School in 1952. She taught in country school for one year. Marlene was united in marriage with Thomas W. Long on March 11, 1953 at Geddes, SD. Tom and Marlene lived in Oklahoma where Tom was stationed in the Army. When Tom went to serve in Korea, Marlene returned to Geddes where she served as a Deputy Treasurer for Charles Mix County for a few years. In 1959, they moved to Valley Springs, SD. Marlene worked for Minnehaha County Bank for 4-5 years. She began selling real estate with Valley Springs Reality. In 1969, they moved to Vermillion for a couple years and returned to Valley Springs. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1987 where she sold real estate for Dakotaland Reality. In 1996, she retired after 21 years selling real estate and they moved to their lake home on Lake Poinsett where they have lived since. Marlene was an active member of the Arlington United Methodist Church where she has been serving as the President of the United Methodist Women, and has served on the Social Action Committee of the South East District for the United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matrian of the Garretson Chapter and she was currently a member in Arlington, SD. Marlene served as Bethel Guardian for Jobs Daughters in Vermillion for a couple years. She is a member of the El Riad Shrine Auxiliary and the Yeldez Shrine Auxiliary. She served as past president of the Valley Springs American Legion Auxiliary, and belongs to the Red Hats Society. Marlene loved to spend her time with her children and grandchildren; she enjoyed golfing and being at their lake home with her husband, Tom. Grateful for having shared her life are husband, Tom Long, Lake Poinsett, SD; a daughter, Faye Jacobs and her husband, Roger, Sturgis, SD; a son, Todd Long and his wife Stacie, Brandon, SD; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Adams and her husband, Jeff, Round Rock, TX; 13 grandchildren, Corey (Katherine) Gunderson, Camelle Gunderson, Cortnie (Eric) Bain, Christopher Lureen, Chelsei Twedell, Connor and Mike Jacobs, Rebecca, Emily and Jenna Long, Chantelle and Lauren Long, and Courtney Adams; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Barbara Dierks, Myrtle Beach, SC; a brother-in-law, Gerald Long and his wife, Dorothy, Oregon City, OR; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Bryan Long on June 4, 1988; and her parents.
