Long, age 83, of Sioux Falls, died on Friday, January 8, 2016. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:00 PM at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Thomas W. Long was born on July 30, 1932 to Gerald and Lova (Simpson) Long at Platte, SD. He grew up and received his education there and would end up pursuing a college education in the banking industry. On March 11, 1952 Tom was united in marriage with Marlene Mackenstadt at Geddes, SD. Tom and Marlene were blessed with three children. Tom first began working driving trucks and combining in the fields. He was proud of the fact that he worked on the Fort Randall Dam construction project. In October of 1952 Tom was drafted into Army in October and honorably served until 1954. He then served with the SD National Guard from 1957-1960. Tom started his banking career in 1954 with Security State Bank in Geddes, SD, moving on to United National Bank and continued as Correspondent Banker at First National Bank for 22 years. He retired from the bank in 1996. Tom served on various committees including Executive Council of the South Dakota Bankers Association, Ag Committee Chairman and Convention Chairman. He was President of Independent Community Banks in 1990-1991. Tom also served as the Director of the Vermillion Development Corporation and was a Charter Member of the Valley Springs Optimist Club. He was Mayor of Valley Springs from 1961 to 1969 and without putting his name on the ballot was re-elected from 1977 to 1987 which his family thought was quite an honor. Tom was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge, active in the El Riad Shrine in the Big Band, and member of the Charles R. Domain Legion Post in Valley Springs. Since retirement Tom served as Member of the Board of Directors of Citizens State Bank in Arlington. Just this past summer Tom was honored with 60 years of service in the banking industry and was very proud of this accomplishment. He enjoyed his time at the lake with family and friends. If you were willing, Tom was always up for a round of golf or a ride on the boat. Tom was an upstanding business man and friend to whomever knew him. He will be greatly missed. Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Long; son, Bryan Long; brother, Gerald Long; and two sisters, Bernadine Strehlow, and Barbara Dierks. From the George Boom Funeral Home
