Mrs. Mattie Duffy Waterbury, aged 65 years, and for many years a resident of Vermillion, passed away in Los Angeles, Calif., last Thursday, September 2nd. She is survived by her husband, a number of grandchildren and large number of relatives in the Vermillion neighborhood, who have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The remains, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Maud Scoville Duffy, are being brought back to Vermillion for burial and will arrive here on the Capital Cities Express tomorrow noon. Due to his extreme age, Mr. Waterbury was unable to make the trip here to attend the funeral, which will be held at the Vermillion cemetery, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. HAD HER DEAD SON Mrs. Mattie Duffy, of Avoca, Iowa, was a passenger on the Central Branch to Vermillion this morning, taking her twenty year old son there for burial. Duffy of McFarland, aged 61 years, 3 months _ days died Friday night, June 19th. Mr. Duffy was married at Frankfort, Kansas, in 1882 to Miss Mattie A. Johnson, and leaves this wife, Walter and Harry, two sons. Mr. Duffy was car inspector for the Rock Island at McFarland and on Friday evening, while testing the air on No. 36, an east bound passenger, the engineer tried to make a coupling, but failed, and the car slid down the track a few feet. crushing the deceased's head between the bumper. Several persons were standing near and pulled the unfortunate man from between the cars. He was at once rushed to the hospital where everything possible was done to save him, but to no avail and without regaining consciousness. He died at 11 o'clock of the same evening he was injured. Masonic funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, conducted by the officers of the Alma lodge, after which the remains were by rail taken to his old home, Vermillion, Kansas, for interment. Mr. Duffy was a kind hearted gentleman and his untimely death has cast a gloom over McFarland. ******************* THE ALMA ENTERPRISE, Alma, Kansas, Friday June 26, 1903. Page 1. A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT Car Inspector J. T. Duffy Killed at McFarland Friday Evening. The people of McFarland and Alma were shocked last Friday evening to learn that John T. Duffy, car inspector for the Rock Island, had been caught and his head crushed between two cars while at work in the yards at McFarland about 6 o'clock. Later came the news of his death, which occurred about 11 o'clock. He never regained consciousness after being hurt. Mr. Duffy had been in the service of the Rock Island for 15 years and was one of its most competent and careful employees. He was born in Henderson County, Illinois, 54 years ago and was married in Marshall County, Kansas, in 1882. He leaves a widow and two bright boys who have the sympathy of all. Mr. Duffy lived in Alma some years ago when the Rock Island first came through, he went to McFarland, being afterwards transferred to Topeka and then to Avoca, Iowa, where he lived for a number of years. He came back to McFarland last December. He was a splendid man, a favorite with all and made many friends. Saturday afternoon the members of the Alma Masonic lodge of which he was an honored member, went to McFarland and held short services at his late home, after which his remains were sent to Vermillion, Kansas, his old home for interment, accompanied by his widow and children and two of his lodge brethren, Oscar Schmitz and Jeff Grandy.
