BABST Martha, the furth child in the home of John and Doroth Lanning, was born April 27th, 1866 at Kingwood, Penn. She died on November 30, 1928, quietly sleeping in her home in Sabetha, Kansas, at the age of 72 years, 9 months and three days. Her girlhood was spent amid the scenes and interests of that earnest Christian community and under the care and training to which she responded with girlish enthusiasm. At the age of twelve years she joined the Methodist church, pledging a devotion to her Lord in which she did not falter through all the years. On Christmas Day 1870 she was married to C. C. Babst and the new home was set up at Kingwood. In 1972 Mr. and Mrs. Babst moved to Kansas, following her parents and his family who had come out several months previously. Mr. Babst located on a farm near Sucamore Springs, northwest of Morrill. Here the family lived through the pioneer days until 1904 when Mr. and Mrs. Babst came to Sabetha. After moving to Kansas the Babst's cast their lot with their neighbors to form and support the class of the United Brethren church. Nine children were born to this home, Cyrus, who lives at Wakefield, Kansas; Dora, Mrs. James Frasier and Cleve of Topeka; Albert of Whiting; Myra, Mrs. Frank Miller, Nettie, Mrs. Norman Schaulis and Maggie, Mrs. Will Phillippi, all of Sabetha; Lewis of Lincoln, Nebr, and Milton, who died at the age of three years. Mrs. Babst is survived by her husband, these eight children, together with twenty-four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; and by three brothers, Albert B. Lanning, Theophilus and Andrew. All of the eight children living were here for the services Sunday. Mrs. Babst has always been a deeply religious nature. She has been a devoted and capable housekeeper, a loving wife and mother. Her husband and her children call her blessed. Her neighbors and fellow-workers in the church, which was her life outside her home, always counted on her presence at all the announced services and her help in all the activities of the various departments to which she belonged. A member from the beginning of the Women's Missionary Association of the U. B. church, and later of the W. F. M.S. of the Methodist church and a constantly devoted worker in the Maids and Matrons Society of the Sabetha church of which society she was a most efficient president for several years, she so lived that it can be truly said, "she hath done what she could." Her sisters of the King's Daughters Class of the Sunday school had their class party only a week ago last Thursday afternoon in her home. For this she prepared and dispensed with the assistance of the usual Committee her quiet and cordial hospitality. Though somewhat tired and worn from the exertion and even then having had a touch of the heart trouble that claimed her at the last nevertheless she made a special effort to be in the Prayer Meeting the same night. It was the first such meeting to be held after two months of united revival efforts in the town, and she felt she must be i the meeting she loved so much. There as elsewhere in her church life she was a faithful and helpful member. In her Bible are many notations revealing her loving trust in the Heavenly Father. Though sadly unexpected by her family and friends, her going was so peaceful and gentle that we are assured she heard the call as she slept and awakened in Heaven.
