Her parents moved from Appanoose County, Iowa initially to Dunbar, Nebraska; then in 1872 to Beaver Crossing, Nebraska then around 1883 to York, Nebraska, opening a homestead each time. They next homesteaded in Rawlins County, Kansas but times were so tough for farmers during these years of grasshoppers and prolonged drought that they next went to Denver, Colorado.
