Description	:	Wife of Deacon Jonathan Hosmer Martha Conant Hosmer was the mother of Abner Hosmer, one of the two American men who died at Concord Bridge on April 19, 1775. He was twenty one when he was killed in the first British volley of musket fire. His father, Deacon Jonathan Hosmer, had gone out to the edge of Acton (originally part of Concord) as the battle progressed, to try and find out about his sons and the other men in the battle. Read More	Wife of Deacon Jonathan Hosmer Martha Conant Hosmer was the mother of Abner Hosmer, one of the two American men who died at Concord Bridge on April 19, 1775. He was twenty one when he was killed in the first British volley of musket fire. His father, Deacon Jonathan Hosmer, had gone out to the edge of Acton (originally part of Concord) as the battle progressed, to try and find out about his sons and the other men in the battle. In the interim, Abner's body had been returned to their home. As Jonathan passed by a window in the house it was remembered many years later that he gave a very loud and sorrowful moan. Of interest is that Abner on the day of the battle wore an eagle pin that is believed to have been given to him by his father, with a mongram of the letters either "J.H. " or "S.H.". The pin was believed to have been Jonathan's or perhaps his father's, named Stephen Hosmer. When Abner died, he was buried with the pin. About 1850, Abner's body was exhumed to be removed to a Concord Batlle monument for reinterment, and the pin was discovered with his bones. It was given to a Hosmer family member. Abner Hosmer's eagle pin is believed to be the first time that an American soldier fighting for what was to become the United States ever wore that American eagle into battle as part of his uniform. The eagle is of course commonly used on military uniforms. Martha Conant Hosmer was the daughter of Lot Conant of Concord, and the descendant of Roger Conant, the original settler of Salem and the unofficial governor of what would become Massachusetts Bay Colony. ~ Contributed by Brian McMurdo, a Hosmer family descendant.
