Hamilton, near Garrison, January 9th, 1890, Mrs. Martha Covert Ransdall, aged 74 years, 4 months and 17 days. She was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, August 23, 1815. Removed when a child with her parents to Johnson county, Indiana, where at the age sixteen she was united in marriage to Robert Ransdall, whose decease occurred a number of years ago. She was the mother of thirteen children, eight of whom – three sons and five daughters – survive her, scattered in their homes from Indiana to Montana. Mrs. Ransdall removed with her family to Benton county, Iowa, in 1836, locating in Big Grove township. For a number of years she had made her home with her children, her kindly presence being ever welcomed by them as a source of comfort and blessing by way of example and loving council. Her last illness was but for the brief period of a week, and the light and benediction of her earthly life is gone from her loved family circle – so suddenly and irreparably. Religiously, Mrs. Ransdall was reared by pious parents in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and most carefully trained in a Christian home, with all that is implied therein of godly upbringing. At the early age of sixteen, on the 16th of October, 1831, she united by profession of faith with old Hopewell Presbyterian church, Indiana (one of the strongest Presbyterian churches in the state). In September, 1866, she transferred her membership by certificate to the Big Grove Presbyterian church. Thus for fifty-eight years she had adorned the Christian profession by a godly walk and conversation. Her children and children’s children as well as neighbors rise up and call her blessed. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” The funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. A. G. Martyn, were held this (Friday) afternoon at Big Grove Presbyterian church, after which she was laid to rest in the cemetery near the church, to await the resurrection of the just. Mrs. Ransdall was a sister to John V. and Simon P. Covert, pioneer settlers in Big Grove, and also sister to Mrs. A. H. LaGrange of Vinton, Iowa. [Submitted by Mark McCrady and Cathea Curry]
