| Description | : | Martha was the second of five children born to weaver Edward Dempsey and his first wife Jane Hay in Drumack, Rasharkin Parish, Portglenone, Co Antrim, just east of Kilrea, Co Derry in what is now Northern Ireland. Martha, her parents and four brothers emigrated from County Antrim 5 July 1832, sponsored by the Montreal Emigration Society, settling near Prescott, Ontario. Her two younger brothers were baptised at First Kilrea Presbyterian, Co Derry, where her future sister-in-law was married in 1836, so perhaps the families knew each other in Ireland.
