Martha was born on March 13, 1921 in Le Mars, Iowa to Simon and Elizabeth (Welter) Hughes. Her family moved to Miner County in South Dakota when she was one year old and Martha grew up on the family farm in the Roswell – Howard area. She attended country grade schools and graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1939 at Argonne High School. Read More	Martha Elizabeth Truhe, 93, of Jefferson, SD passed away, Sunday, December 28th at Wel-Cov Assisted Living in Elk Point, SD. Martha was born on March 13, 1921 in Le Mars, Iowa to Simon and Elizabeth (Welter) Hughes. Her family moved to Miner County in South Dakota when she was one year old and Martha grew up on the family farm in the Roswell – Howard area. She attended country grade schools and graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1939 at Argonne High School. She received her teaching certificate in 1940 from Notre Dame College in Mitchell, SD and taught in country schools near DeSmet, Canton, Elk Point, and Jefferson until 1948 when she and her husband started their family. Martha married Julius “Duke” Truhe, on November 10, 1945 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. The couple resided in Jefferson for over 60 years. Duke passed away June 17, 2009. For the past nine years, Martha has been a resident at Wel-Life (later Wel-Cov) Assisted Living in Elk Point. Martha was very active in her church and community in Jefferson. She was a member of the St. Peter’s Altar Society and St. Peter’s Mothers’ Club, where she served as a past-president. She was secretary for the Jefferson School Board and a co-founder of the “Firettes”, the auxiliary to the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department. She also served as a Cub Scout Den and Brownie Scout Troop Mother for her older children as well as serving on a host of committees and boards in Jefferson. Martha loved nothing better than spending time with her large extended family. She never missed a church or school activity of her children and grandchildren, and was always happy and proud of their accomplishments and their lives. She took great joy in organizing and planning family reunions and staying in touch with her many relatives. She enjoyed reading, cooking, letter-writing, babysitting, playing cards and cribbage, her many social clubs, crosswords puzzles, bingo, coffee with friends and was the best sender-of-cards, to family and friends, for every occasion. Grieving her loss are her survivors including sons, Joe (Deb) Truhe of Jefferson, Dr. Tom Truhe of Palm Springs, CA, and Don (Brenda) Truhe of Elk Point. Daughters; Jean Truhe of Orlando, FL, Pat (Mike) Christiansen of Sioux City, IA, and a daughter-in-law, Ann Truhe of Elk Point. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, two sisters; Delores (Lou) Garrod of Omaha, DE, Anna (Nick) Nichols of Knoxville, IL; many nephews, nieces, and a host of wonderful friends. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Duke; her youngest son, Jim; two brothers, Simon (Bud) Hughes and Francis (Shorty) Hughes; four sisters, Sister Zita Hughes, Rita Bourassa, Leone Rector, and Nora Van Verth; 5 sisters-in-law, 6 brothers-in-law, two nephews, and a niece. Martha has willed her body (as did her husband) to the University of South Dakota Medical School. The family extends their sincerest thanks to the entire staff at Wel-Cov Assisted Living in Elk Point.
