Description	:	Martha Ellen Ross was the youngest of ten children born to William and Catherine (Barnes) Ross. Martha Ellen was born December 29, 1867 in New Canton, Pleasant Vale Township, Pike County, Illinois. Her parents had moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania about 1854. In the early 1880s William Ross moved with his family, including Martha, to Audrain County, Missouri. In 1886 they moved again from Missouri to Hand County, Dakota Territory. Martha Ellen was born December 29, 1867 in New Canton, Pleasant Vale Township, Pike County, Illinois. Her parents had moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania about 1854. In the early 1880s William Ross moved with his family, including Martha, to Audrain County, Missouri. In 1886 they moved again from Missouri to Hand County, Dakota Territory. On May 22, 1889 Martha's sister Mary married Harry Greeves. Mary, being the fifth child, was 12 years older than Martha. Martha married Henry Rufus Greeves, nephew of Harry Greeves, on March 11, 1891. Martha was 8 years younger than HR. The generation gap was closed. HR Greeves owned a grocery and dry goods store in Miller, Hand County, South Dakota. He and Martha lived in a house in the center of town near the railroad station and grain depot. The address was given as First Street East or Channing Street. Names for streets are no longer used in Miller. No house address was ever given. Martha (Ross) Greeves and HR Greeves had three children: Earl Everett, Bertha E. (Rudd), and Ida Louise (Shepard). All three children were well educated, graduated from Miller HS and went to college at a time when college education was rare. Martha Ellen (Ross) Greeves died of cancer on November 12, 1934 at Miller, SD. In an obituary the following is said: "Mrs. Greeves gave expression to her Christian faith by uniting first with the Evangelical Church and later when the Christian Church was organized in Miller, by uniting in the fellowship of that Church. Surviving are her husband, one son, Earl of Gettysburg, two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Rudd of Miller and Mrs. Ida Shepard of Casper, Wyo. Her youngest brother, Nathan Ross, resides in Medicine Lake, Wash. Five sisters and three brothers preceeded [sic] her in death." Martha had six grandchildren. Eventually Martha would have 16 great grandchildren. Martha (Ross) Greeves was buried in GAR cemetery in Miller.
