Today someone asked a question about another member of this family so I decided to try again and things just started clicking! I originally found Mattie working as a bookkeeper/manager for my Great-Grand Aunt and Uncle, John and Ellen Bird in one of their boarding houses in Sacramento. She was going by the name of Mattie Dixon. She came to light when she married Thomas Raymond Belew (Kavanaugh), nephew of Ellen and son of Ellens sister Tennessee.... Today someone asked a question about another member of this family so I decided to try again and things just started clicking! I originally found Mattie working as a bookkeeper/manager for my Great-Grand Aunt and Uncle, John and Ellen Bird in one of their boarding houses in Sacramento. She was going by the name of Mattie Dixon. She came to light when she married Thomas Raymond Belew (Kavanaugh), nephew of Ellen and son of Ellens sister Tennessee. His name was actually Thomas Raymond Belew but I suspect that when he went AWOL from the Marines he came back to Sacramento and changed his name to Kavanaugh. His mother had married a Kavanaugh in 1901 and separated from him after a few months…they were only married for a little over a year when Kavanaugh died in 1902…but Thomas Raymond was going by Belew and had been living with his mother and using the last name of Belew. He was using the name Belew when he went into the Marines. His Military file ends with a warrant never served.
