The particulars leading up to this double funeral of mother and son are hereby recorded in order of occurrence. Alvin "Dutch" Ulrich, age 59, general storekeeper at Greensboro the past 20 years, while on the way to the home of his mother on Saturday night, December 1st, was waylaid by three or more highwaymen and shot down and robbed of $29,which he was carrying in an envelope. Another envelope of $50, secreted in a skull cap beneath his hat, was overlooked by the bandits. A shotgun was used to halt and bring down Ulrich, who, disobeying the command to "Stand and deliver," started on a run for his home. As he fled one of the gunmen swung his gun to his shoulder and fired the load of shot entering and crushing the bones of his right leg below the knee. So serious was the wound that Mr. Ulrich was hastened to the Clinic at New Castle for immediate attention. On Wednesday while his mother, unknown to him and her neighbors, lay a corpse in her home, the bullet-ridden leg was amputated above the knee. This was done with the hope of preserving his life. Shot, numbering 155, were taken from the amputated member. All of Thursday and Friday his condition was pronounced precarious. On Friday night at 9:45 o'clock he passed away. The deceased was a graduate of Spiceland Academy and a member of the Greensboro Masonic lodge. On the evening of Wednesday, December 5th, Mrs. Martha Howard Ulrich, the 83 year old mother of Alvin Ulrich was found dead in her bedroom by her daughter, Mrs. Lon Manifold, of Muncie. Mrs. Ulrich was subject to heart attacks and the supposition is that she died as the result of a shock upon learning that her son Alvin had few chances of recovery. The daughter had visited her the evening previous, leaving for home with the promise of returning next day to remain as companion. Upon her return the daughter found that the mother had died the very night she had bidden good bye. When found the bedroom lamp was still burning. Mrs. Ulrich was born in Cambridge City. She was the widow of the Hon. Levi Ulrich, elected in 1904 and 1906 as state representative from Henry County. She and her husband came to Greensboro from Wayne county, bringing with them their son Alvin, who grew to manhood and succeeded his father in the management of Greensboro's general store. Had she lived, Mrs. Ulrich would have been 84 years of age the 19th day of this month. Her surviving children are Mrs. Manifold, of Muncie, and Mrs. Clara Wood, of Yakima, Wash. There are four surviving sisters and three brothers, namely, Mrs. Horace Herr, Fort Myers, Fla., Mrs. Frank Hoover, of Hagerstown; Mrs. Charles Bertsch and Mrs. Amos Lannard, Cambridge City; Joe Howard, Cambridge City; Isaiah Howard, Muncie, and Oscar Howard, Detroit. The bodies of mother and son were removed to the Howard funeral home in Cambridge City and there prepared for the last rites. Thus closes a sad and deplorable incident of Henry county life that in years to come will be recalled by the coming generation."
