MARTHA JANE SHARP Mrs. Martha Jane Beech, daughter of Jesse and Irene Beech, was born in Illinois, November 9, 1837, and passed away in Lacona, Iowa, September 5, 1929, aged 91 years, 9 months and 26 days. She was married in Illinois to Lewis Freeman and to his union were born twelve children, six girls and six boys. Of these only three are living, Mrs. Anna Brennan, of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. Alice Penwell and Mrs. Hattie Brown, of Lacona. There are also a number of grandchildren and other relatives and friends to mourn the loss of this beloved Mother. The family moved from Illinois to Appanoose County, Iowa, and after the death of Mr. Freeman, to Warren County. Here Mrs. Freeman was married to George Sharp, who passed away in 1904. For the past 17 years Grandma Sharp has made her home with Mrs. Penwell. She has been poorly most of the time, yet always having patience and ever mindful of the loving care of her two daughters. She was a lover of nature and the flowers, delighting in the wonderful array of color and mindful of the power of her Creator. She has lived to a ripe age, yet will be missed by those nearest and dearest to her. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many. Enter into your rest." Mrs. Sharp was a member of the Christian church. The services were held at her late home Saturday afternoon, Sept. 7, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Ida B. Thom of the M.E. church. A male quartet consisting of E. B. Mosher, Glen Holmes, Harvey Fetters and Darrel Parkins, rendered, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Rock of Ages". The burial was in the Newbern cemetery. "Home at last! and over yonder Just within the pearly gates, Watching still for loved ones coming, Now the sainted mother waits. She died in 1929, at the start of the great depression. Next to the grave of George E. Sharp was a rusted marker, recorded on old Newbern tombstones readings that I think was likely where her grave was.
