She has been a resident of Comstock for several years and is well-known as "Grandma Petet." Martha Lovina Fuller was born Dec. 22, 1847, near a small town Boston, in Lee county, Iowa, and passed away Sunday, Feb. 14, 1932, at her home and also the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Adams. When still an infant she moved with her parents to Knoxville, Marion county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to James Laben Petet, who had enlisted in Company B, 3rd Iowa Voluntary Infantry, and fought in many battles, but he was discharged June 18, 1864, having served his country well for three years, and it was in this year that the couple was united in marriage. Mr. Petet departed this life on May 11, 1913. In the fall of 1875, this couple moved west, locating near Omaha, where they lived for eight years, and in 1883, they came to Custer county and lived two and one-half miles southeast of Sargent near the Middle Loup river for several years. She spent a share of her life in the vicinity of Sargent, Wescott and Comstock, moving to Comstock in March 1906. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Petet sold her home in Comstock and moved west with her daughter, Mrs. Jim Adams, and son, George Petet, and located near Craig, Colo., where she took a homestead of 300 acres of land four and one-half miles west of Craig. After proving up on this land she sold out and returned to Comstock in October, 1916. Here she bought another home and resided until the fall of 1929, when she moved with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Adams to Mitchell, Nebr. As she was bedfast most of the time she became very homesick and longed for the old friends and old home, so returned to Sargent in August 1930, later moving to Comstock. However, ill health crept on and on, Nov. 14, 1931, she was taken seriously ill and has never been able to be about since then. Mrs. Petet was a faithful member of the W.R.C. for many years. At the age of twenty years she was baptized into the Christian church of Knoxville, Iowa. Several years ago her membership card was placed in the Christian church at Coburg, Nebr. She was the mother of ten children, all living but one daughter, who are: Lewis A. of De Queen, Arkansas; Sarah Caroline Saunders, passed away December 25, 1888; Mary Alice Hively of Hooper, Nebr.; James C. of Marshfield, Mo,; Edith Belle Brown of Hamilton, Mont.; Edward B. of near Brewster, Nebr.; George R. of Bayard, Nebr.; Ben F. of Sargent, Nebr.; Gussie M. Eggers of Stevenville, Mont.; and Nancy A. Adams of Comstock, Nebr. Grandmother Petet as she has been called for many years, also leaves to mourn her loss fifty-eight grandchildren, sixty-eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and very, many friends everywhere. She has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Adams since April 28, 1927, and has had the best of care. She was very patient and bore her suffering the best she could for over three years, passing away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 1932, at the age of 84 years, one month and twenty-three days. She will be greatly missed as she was dearly love by all and will be especially missed by her daughter, Mrs. Adams, who has cared for her for many months. Funeral services were held from the Comstock Theater building in Comstock, Wednesday, Feb. 18, at two o'clock. The Rev. A.D. Kenyon of Lewellen, Nebr. being in charge. Interment was made in the Douglas Grove cemetery. The pallbearers were Ed Frete, Art Matheson, S.T. Stevens, E.J. Crawford, Jake Chalupsky, and J.T. Arthur.
