Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent, Nebraska is in charge of arraignments. Martha was born May 24th, 1929 to Conard and Amy Huffaker on their farm south of Broken Bow, Nebraska. She attended country school near Buckeye, Nebraska at Round Hill. She finished her high school years in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Martha was united in marriage to Bobby Raymond Sutton, September 17, 1949 and to this union two sons were born. Sterling Gene, born March 10, 1950 and Conard Ray born February 10, 1951. She was blessed with five grandchildren. When Martha went shopping, and it was quite often, she was always seeing things that her granddaughters would look good in or how her grandsons would be tickled over some little thing. After getting everything she wanted to get for them, then she would take time and find the bargains for herself. She was always thinking of others before herself. Give Martha a day in Dillards shopping and her life was complete. On top of that, she really knew her bargains and could tell the difference between a fake and an antique. Martha’s heart was big as a mountain. She was always thinking of others, never uttering a bad word about anyone and really scolding those who did. She always said, “If I can’t say something good about someone I won’t say anything at all.” She was a God fearing woman, always putting her problems in the Lord’s hands and He seemed to solve most of them for her. Martha did a lot of baking; cookies, kolaches, cake, pies, etc. She would always make a double portion so when she finished, she would start taking some to shut-ins or to her many friends. Martha dearly loved sports. She played on the women’s softball team in her younger days. She then took up golf and was really good at it: in fact, she was one of the better golfers when she was young. She was asked to be on a bowling team early on. She became an avid bowler and entered many bowling tournaments and was on national television one time. Another activity she took up was Bridge. She dearly fell in love with bridge and was very adept at it. Martha was card savvy and could see plays well in advance that made her so good at it. Martha was a hard worker and always maintained a big garden and just seemed to have a green thumb. Her mother taught her very well on when, where and what time everything should be in the ground and when it should be harvested. She also enjoyed making quilts and made many for the grandchildren. After her marriage to Bobby, she was baptized into the United Methodist Church here in Sargent. The minister at the time was Rev. Robert Frescoln. Martha and Bobby became very close to the Frescoln family and they had much to do with bringing Christ into Martha and Bobby’s lives. Bobby and Martha were preceded in death by their parents, Bobby’s older brother Sterling, Martha’s brother Dean Huffaker and wife Glee, sister’s Jeanie Eacker and Maurene Biggerstaff and husband Clifford, Bobby’s brother-in-law Ken Hilligas, Martha’s brother-in-law Clarence Wagner and sister-in-law Beverly Huffaker. Survivors include son Sterling and daughter-in-law Sherry of Sargent, Nebraska; grandson Jesse and wife Jessica of Pocatello, Idaho; grandson Brady of Kearney, Nebraska; son Conard and daughter-in-law Doralea of Sargent, Nebraska; granddaughter Tanya and husband Chad Stecker of Pineville, Louisiana, great grandchildren Makayla, Liam and Carwyn; granddaughter Tracy and husband Ryan Cone of Arthur, Nebraska, great granddaughter Collins; grandson John of Sargent, Nebraska; Bobby’s sister Ramona Hilligas of Grand Island, Nebraska, Martha’s sister Willa Wagner of Ericson, Nebraska, brother Marvin Huffaker and wife Barb of Topeka, Kansas and brother-in-law George Eacker and many friends and family. Bobby’s father, grandfather and great grandfather are all buried in the West Union Cemetery, west of Sargent. From www.sandhillsexpress.com
