A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015, at All Saints Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars, with Reverend Kevin Richter officiating. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Pallbearers will be Alan Sitzmann, Bret Sitzmann, Cole Sitzmann, Darin Sitzmann, Jake Even, Jill Manning, Kelli Zimmerman, Brenda Sitzmann, and Shelby Sitzmann. Martha Mary Gengler was born October 11, 1922, on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa, the fifth child of Michael and Margaret (Goetzinger) Gengler. Martha attended St. Mary’s Parochial School of Remsen all twelve years, graduating in 1940. That same year Martha and Roy met at an Avalon Ballroom dance in Remsen. Roy defied severe winter weather, driving through fields, to propose to Martha. They were married January 27, 1942. In 1946 Roy completed his military service in World War II, and the couple began to build a family-farm operation in the Kingsley area. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church – Neptune until its closure. She then became a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Martha was a member of the Catholic Daughters. Martha and Roy enjoyed going to dances at the Avalon Ballroom and other ballrooms around the area. They also enjoyed their travels, having toured Ireland, Mexico, Germany, France, Hawaii, Colorado, and Alaska. Martha also enjoyed quilting and gave each of her children an heirloom quilt. Survivors include her sons: Roy A. (Mary) Sitzmann of Le ,Mars and Lon (Janice) Sitzmann and Ted (Betty) Sitzmann both of Kingsley; her daughters: Gayle (Mick) Even of Le Mars and Ellyn (Dave) Petersen of Hartley, IA; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rita Sitzmann of Le Mars; in-laws: Margaret Gengler-Kohler of Remsen, Marjorie Gengler of Quimby, IA, and Viola Gengler of Remsen; and many nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Roy; her parents; a son, Kent; six brothers: Mike R., Al, Joe, Ray, Clarence, and Vernon; and two sisters: Norma Kayser and Marie Tentinger.
