Martha Matilda Sampson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Hanson, was born in Falun, Sweden, June 11, 1863, and passed away at her home Tuesday morning Nov. 5, 1935, being at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 24 days. Mrs. Sampson grew into young womanhood at her parental home in Sweden, being educated in the public schools of her country. Early in life she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and became affiliated with the church of her convictions. With the challenge of new opportunities across the seas she sailed for America, coming to Burlington, Iowa, at the age of 17. There she worked for a number of years. On March 1, 1888[sic:1884], she was united in marriage with Mr. Truman M. Sampson of Burlington, and to this union was added four children, three sons and one daughter. In 1884 Mr. and Mrs. Sampson moved to their farm southwest of Mt. Pleasant where each of them have resided until their departure from this life. Mrs. Sampson was a devoted Christian mother, always interested in the welfare of her children. A spirit of sacrifice characterized her life. She was a faithful and devoted member of the first Baptist church of Mt. Pleasant. She leaves to mourn her departure, her daughter, Mrs. Ruth White of Salem, Iowa; three sons, Gustafus A., James F., and Hiram T. Sampson, all of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Wien of Cook, Minnesota, Mrs. Fanny Redding of Lake Nebagamon, Wis., and Mrs. Anna Young of Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Claude and Frank Hanson of Superior, Wis., 13 grandchildren, besides a host of other friends and relatives.
