Vincent passed away at her home in Cantril, Iowa, Friday evening, July 7, 1922, at eightthirty, following an illness of several months duration. Mrs. Vincent’s maiden name was Martha Matilda Withum. She was the daughter of Eli and Susan C. Withum, and was born in Brighton, Jefferson County, Iowa, November 15, 1847. When she was thirteen years of age she moved with her parents to Kilbourn, Van Buren county, and from there to Mt. Sterling, Iowa. Here, on January 18, 1863, she was united in marriage to William Marshall Tharp. To this union two children were born, John T. Tharp, who now resides near Mt. Sterling, in Van Buren county, and Belle Tharp Corwin, residing at Hot Springs, California. Later in life she was married to Mr. S. E. Vincent, a merchant at Lebanon, Iowa. Mrs. Vincent was a very remarkable woman. She met all the issues and vicissitudes of life with courage and fortitude. In early life she accepted Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, placing her membership with the class at Mt. Sterling, Iowa, where it remained until her death. Service was the dominant keynote of her life, putting self aside, and following the Scriptural injunction of “doing unto others,” she lived a life of service. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a true friend of all. She was one of six sisters, and the last one in passing. She leaves on this side of the river one son, one daughter, one granddaughter, six nephews, one niece, and a wide circle of more distant relatives, and a host of friends, who will ever remember her, and call her name blessed. She went quietly away. Her passing was peaceful; but sorrow fills the hearts of all who knew her. Appropriate funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Cantril Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. W. Cochran. Interment was made in the Harness cemetery east of Mt. Sterling.
