Martha was born April 14, 1903, in Brule County near Kimball, SD, to Vaclav and Katerina (Brtna) Kapsa. In 1911, the Kapsa family moved to a homestead near Redig in Harding County. She attended a one-room school near Redig, high school in Belle Fourche, and Spearfish Normal, graduating in June 1924. Martha taught school in Harding County, Lemmon, SD, Meade County, and St. Martin's elementary school in Sturgis. While teaching in Meade County, she met and married John W. Brunson at Glenn Cross, SD, on May 18, 1929. The Brunsons ranched and farmed at Plainview, SD, until 1937, when during the Great Depression they moved to Illinois, returning to South Dakota in 1939. They purchased a ranch-farm near Plainview and lived there until 1951, when they moved to Sturgis. In 1987, the couple moved to Spearfish. Since 1995, Martha has lived at Tender Care in Spearfish. Martha was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Altar Society in Sturgis, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish, a life member of the Royal Neighbors of America, and a member of the Senior Citizens Centers in Sturgis and Spearfish. Martha is survived by her daughter, Eileen Lecy and her husband, Vern, Spearfish; eight grandchildren, Michael Bachand and Nancy, Laurel Moore and Bradley, Marty Campbell and Scott, Kevin Brunson and Tammy, Douglas, William and Nick Brunson, and Jacque Brunson Brown and Richard; fifteen great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, Robin Lecy, Dan Lecy and Dixie, and Rebecca Kemerling and Jim; six step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; her special friend, DeLores Comack; and Aileen and Edgar Burr and their staff and family who cared for her in a special way at Tender Care. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John on May 21, 1991; her son, Jack on December 19, 1974; her daughter, Joan Daane Brunson on January 15, 1994; her granddaughter, Mary Kay Bachand on October 4, 1982; three brothers; and four sisters. A living memorial has been established to the Tender Care Assisted Living Facility in Spearfish.
