Martha Oline Lou Ann Kleven was born June 6. 1920. on a farm two miles northwest of Ryder. to Peder L and Annie Ovidia (Johnson) Kleven. In 1925, her family moved to a home 12 miles south of Berthold. She attended the Tolgen and Mandan Township schools through the 8th grade. Martha Oline Lou Ann Kleven was born June 6. 1920. on a farm two miles northwest of Ryder. to Peder L and Annie Ovidia (Johnson) Kleven. In 1925, her family moved to a home 12 miles south of Berthold. She attended the Tolgen and Mandan Township schools through the 8th grade. She attended school in Plaza her freshman and sophomore years while living with her aunt and uncle, Mathilda and John Bermel. She was confirmed at the Lutheran church there. She attended her junior and senior years at Berthold High School, graduating in She attended Minot State Teachers College in 1937 and 1938 and one term of summer school in 1940. While in college, she worked for the Alger family. She taught school for two years in Evergreen and Lund Townships of Ward County. She married Thomas Elstoen, son of Anton and Gina Elstoen, on November 18, 1940 in Sidney. MT. They farmed the Elstoen family farm five miles west of Berthold in Passport Township of Ward County all of their married life. She taught at Passport Township School for one year after their marriage and for two months in Tolgen Township for her sister. Norma, while she was on maternity leave. She also assisted her husband for many years in the operation of the farm. Thomas died Ian. 27, 2001. Martha was a member at Zion Lutheran Church. Berthold. She was a member of the Zion ELCW, an adviser for the Luther League and served Sunday superintendent and She served as the clerk for the Passport School District, was with FFA at the Berthold School, a member of the Ward County Farm Bureau and volunteered at Norsk Hostfest. She was a modest, articulate, unassuming woman of many talents. She was very creative; she enjoyed writing, painting sewing and needlework. She sewed clothing, the wedding and baptismal gowns for her family. Grammie Martha was very devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family: children, Faith (Eugene) Kinaschuk. Man. Brandeen, Noah and Annabelle Casso, Joseph and Devin Greaves; and special great-niece. Logan Johnson: sister. Doris Edwardson, Minot; brothers. Archie (Marlene) Kleven. Mentor. Minn., and Peter (Janice) Kleven, Des Lacs; sister-in-law. Myrtle Johnson, Berthold: and brother-Nin-law, Gordon Elstoen, St. Helens, Ore.: and numerous nephews and many friends. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister. Norma Tudahl: and brothers. Lloyd and Arnot Kleven. Funeral: Tuesday. March 6, 2007, at 10:30 at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold. Interment: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold. Visitation: 1 to 4 pm. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot; and one hour prior to a family service at 7 pm at the church in Berthold.
