Description	:	BERTHOLD - Thomas Hjalmer Elstoen, 81, Berthold, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in a Minot hospital. He was born Nov. 22, 1919, in rural Berthold to Anton and Gina Elstoen. He grew up and was educated in Robinson School, rural Berthold. As a young man he farmed with his family. He married Martha Kleven Nov. 18, 1940, in Sidney, Mont. They farmed in Passport Township. Read More	BERTHOLD - Thomas Hjalmer Elstoen, 81, Berthold, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, in a Minot hospital. He was born Nov. 22, 1919, in rural Berthold to Anton and Gina Elstoen. He grew up and was educated in Robinson School, rural Berthold. As a young man he farmed with his family. He married Martha Kleven Nov. 18, 1940, in Sidney, Mont. They farmed in Passport Township. In the fall of 1946, they moved for a short time to Portland, Ore. In 1947, they returned to Passport Township and continued farming. In addition to farming, from 1957 to 1959, he worked as a foreman in the housing construction at Minot Air Force Base. From 1961 through 1965, he was a partner in Appliance Repair. He retired from farming in 1982. He served on the Passport Township Board for many years and also on the Ward County Farm Bureau Board of Directors which he was president in 1978. He was a lifelong member Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold, and served on the church council as a Luther League advisor for many years. He belonged to the Sons of Norway and the Minot Moose Lodge. He did formal instruction on the violin and won numerous awards including First Place Senior Division at the Old Time Fiddler's Contest, which is held at the International Peace Garden. He was one of the original organizers of the Norsk Hostfest Fiddlers Contest. Survivors: wife, sons, Roger, Minot, Glenn, Mesa. Ariz.; daughters, Faith Kinaschuk, Winnipeg, Man., Nancy Neshem, Berthold, Hope VanDyke, Minot; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon, St. Helens, Ore.; sister, Myrtle Johnson, Berthold. Funeral: Wednesday at 11 a. m. in Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold. (Anderson Nelson Funeral Home, Mohall) Burial: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold.
