Death came with scarcely a moment's warning. Mrs. Duke had just asked one of her little girls for her thimble when she placed her hand on her heart and exclaimed that she was ill. Then she sank into a chair and breathed her last. Mr. Duke had just left the house and had only gone a few yards when he was called back. Every effort was made to tide her over the spell, but all was in vain and she passed away surrounded by her loved ones. For several years Mrs. Duke was afflicted with heart trouble, but for some days before her demise she appeared to be enjoying excellent health. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Roulston of Caledon and was born 48 years ago in the neighborhood where she lived all her life. She was a woman of many virtues and by her kindly manner and lovable disposition made many friends and her death is deeply regretted. Besides a husband she leaves one son, William, and five daughters, Olive, Edna, Tillie, May and Alta and they have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to St. John's cemetery, Mono, and was largely attended, the cortege consisting of 90 vehicles. Rev. Mr. Perry conducted religious services and the pallbearers were Messrs. John, James and Alex. Speers, James Lemon, Thomas J. Henry and James Minnings. Duke, a much loved and respected citizen of Caledon township, departed this life on Friday, June 2nd, passing away quite unexpectedly. Mrs. Duke was in her 48th year, and was born on lot 20, 4th line, east, Caledon, whence she was married to Mr. William Duke, twenty-six years ago. The newly married couple took up their residence on lot 19, 3rd line, east, Caledon, where eight children were born to them. Her husband, five daughters and one son survive to mourn the loss of a gentle wife and loving mother. Mrs. Duke's maiden name was Martha Roulstin. Her aged mother and four sisters - Mrs. Thos. St. John, Palgrave, Mrs. Israel Sweezey, Holland Landing, Mrs. W. T. Welwood, Macville, and Miss Sarah Roulstin, Newmarket - survive, and were all present at the funeral. The remains were taken to St. John's cemetery, 7th Line, Mono, for interment on Sunday afternoon, the cortege leaving the house at 2 p.m., after a short service held out of consideration for the aged mother, who was unable to follow the body to its last resting place. The officiating clergyman was Rev. R. J. W. Perry, the gifted rector of Mono Mills Parish. The funeral was very largely attended showing the esteem in which the departed woman was held. the late Mrs. Duke was a woman who was ever willing to extend a helping hand, a kind word and a cheery smile. She was a friend to all, thinking only of others. The bereaved husband and family have the sympathy of the entire community. Some of the friends present from a distance were: - Mr. and Mrs. G. Ford, son and daughter, of Beeton; Mrs. John Roulstin and Mr. James Minnion, of Holland Centre; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McKee, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Hall, Whitfield; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cornett, Hillsburgh; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ryall, Hockley, and Mr. and Mrs. R.. J. Fleming, Violet Hill. The remains were borne to their last resting place by Messrs. Jas. Lemon, Alex. Speers, T. J. Henry, James Minnion, John Speers and James Speers. The floral tributes included a wreath from the family, a spray from Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Duke, a spray from Mr. and Mrs. Geo. McKee, a wreath from Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Mills, a wreath from Mr. and Mrs. A. Mills and a sheaf from Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Speers. Gone but a little while, gone to Heaven ahead, To lead us by an angel smile, to Jesus, as she said. Our Saviour took her home, the patient, gentle one Where she in love will roam, her earthly tasks are done. So loving good and true, to those about each day; They'll miss her, those who knew - more than any words can say.
