She retired as a beautician and operated various shops in Mathews and Gloucester Counties, the most recent being the Glo Mar Beauty Shop at the intersection of State Route 3 and 14 in Mathews County. She was a member of Locust Grove United Methodist Church and the Piankatank Rebecca's Lodge No. 85. She was born on Jan. 21, 1913, the daughter of Ernest and Nellie Raines. She received her education in the public schools of Mathews County. She married Hathel Brooking, and to this union they shared one wonderful son, John "Billy" William Brooking. Anyone who knew Ruth was touched by her gentle spirit and zest for life. She was always a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, John "Billy" William Brooking, and his wife, Mary Rose; one grandson, George "Marty" Broaddus, and his wife, Kimberly Milby Broaddus; two great-grandchildren, Fallon Nicolle Broaddus and Madison Grace Broaddus; two sisters, Roselyn Diggs and Marie Henley, both of Hampton; one niece and three nephews; and a host of cousins and friends. A homegoing service conducted by the Rev. Kerry Boggs and Marion Paul White will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Locust Grove United Methodist Church, Mathews. Interment will follow in Windsor Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In her memory, memorial contributions may be made to Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad or to the American Cancer Society. There will be a gathering at the church for family and friends following the interment. Local arrangements by Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
