Grimes was born in Pocahontas Co., West Virginia, on June 26, 1843 and died at her home in Monroe Co., Iowa, on Dec. 15, 1911, aged 68 years, 5 months and 19 days. She was united in marriage to Peter H. Grimes on Dec. 25, 1866. To this union six children were born, viz., Mrs. P. E. Beebout of Seymour, Ia.; Mrs. B. B. Barger, of Seymour, Ia.; F. B. Grimes, who resides on the old home farm, E. H. Grimes, of Monroe Co., Ia.; Mrs. W. H. Boothe and H. C. Grimes, of Lucas Co., Iowa. These, along with 17 grandchildren, one sister, Laura Moore and one brother, Morgan Grimes, of Pocahontas Co., W. Va., are left to mourn their loss. Her husband preceded her to the better land 13 years ago. At the age of six years she was left an orphan and was reared by her sister. She was converted at an early age and united with the M. E. church of which she has been a consistent member ever since. Soon after her marriage, she and her husband came to Moravia, Iowa, where they resided for one year and then removed to the homestead in Monroe Co., where she has resided ever since. Mrs. Grimes was a model Christian, living a quiet, home-loving and pious life, which endeared her to all who knew her. She loved the Bible and her favorite passages were found in the writings of St. John. Just before her death she repeated St. John 14:2, which was used as a text at her funeral. Her death was a triumph. She called her family around her bidding them good-bye, and asked them to meet her in heaven. With trust in God, her refuge and praise upon her lips, she departed to be with the Lord she loved so much. Interment was made in the Coal Glen cemetery.
