Description	:	Martha Schellenberger was born in Poppelsdorf, Bonn, Prussia, Mar 11, 1894, to Joseph and Martha Schellenberger. She was their second child and eldest daughter. Martha's father sensed that war was coming to Germany and desired to emigrate with his family to America. He sent his eldest son, Eugen, to work in Caldwell, Alberta, in 1910. Read More	Martha Schellenberger was born in Poppelsdorf, Bonn, Prussia, Mar 11, 1894, to Joseph and Martha Schellenberger. She was their second child and eldest daughter. Martha's father sensed that war was coming to Germany and desired to emigrate with his family to America. He sent his eldest son, Eugen, to work in Caldwell, Alberta, in 1910. The next child, Otto, was sent in 1912. Martha was sent in 1913 to the same area of Canada. Martha was heart broken when she learned of her mother's death on Nov 13, 1914. She had no way to get back to her family in Germany, and the war made it impossible for any more of the family to make their way to Canada. There were 13 children in the family by that time and being the eldest daughter, Martha wanted to help her younger brothers and sisters, but was powerless to do so. According to Elaine Nelson of Cardston, Martha lived with the Jacobs family in Caldwell for a month or two before moving to Raymond. She did ironing, sewing, and cleaning, all very quickly and well. Martha lived in Raymond and worked as a swimming instructor and probably a housekeeper. Eugen and Otto were employed on a farm close by in Caldwell. She met August Lenz in April 1915 and was quite taken with the handsome returned missionary. They were married a short time later on May 19, 1915. Martha had her first child Aug 11, 1916, and named her daughter after the sister she had never seen, Charlotte Irmgard. Shortly after Lottie's birth, they moved to the Parish place in Hillspring. Life at home was busy, and she kept her house very clean. It was said that she kept her floors so clean that a person could have eaten off of them. Martha had quite a temper and would even throw things at August if provoked too far. Joseph Henry was born May 14, 1918. The doctor who delivered this baby was responsible for the peritonitis that resulted from the birth, and both mother and baby succumbed to the infection brought by the doctor. The doctor was eventually run out of the area for his practices, but it was too late to benefit Martha and Joseph.
