Main St., North Manchester, and formerly of Liberty Mills, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday at her son's residence in Pittsboro. Martha was born June 4, 1917, in Mills Branch, Ky., to Mort and Mollie (Howard) Shepherd. She was married Nov. 16, 1935, in Kentucky to Lacy Whitaker, who preceded her in death Feb. 3, 2001. Main St., North Manchester, and formerly of Liberty Mills, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday at her son's residence in Pittsboro. Martha was born June 4, 1917, in Mills Branch, Ky., to Mort and Mollie (Howard) Shepherd. She was married Nov. 16, 1935, in Kentucky to Lacy Whitaker, who preceded her in death Feb. 3, 2001. Martha was a homemaker and also worked at Heckman Bindery and Controls Co. of North Manchester. She was a member of the Sweetwater Assembly of God, North Manchester, and also attended Akron Church of God and the High School Road Church of Christ, Indianapolis. She loved gardening and sewing and she was a people lover. Survivors include five daughters, Alicia and husband Jim Shreve, Fort Wayne; Norma and husband William Cassaday, Arkansas; Sadie and husband Joe Shafer, Macy; Darlene Krause, North Palm Beach, Fla.; and Nadene and husband Gary Ward, Fort Wayne. Three sons, William R. and wife Janice Whitaker, Pittsboro; Earl and wife Jackie Whitaker, Warsaw; and Henry C. Whitaker, New Haven. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers and three sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011 or the Day by Day Hospice, 1668 E. Main St., Danville, IN 46122.
