OBITUARY: A day after they moved into Eureka to occupy the former Jacob Schutz home, Mrs. Jacob (Martha) Hoff, 55, became ill and never learned to really enjoy her new abode. She had been ailing somewhat for years, but not seemingly serious. On Tuesday, Oct. 9, she entered the local hospital when pain set in and was then advised to be taken to Rochester where a partial operation was performed the following week on Tuesday, Oct. 16. She did not recover and died at 6 a.m. Oct. 17 in Rochester. Services were held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. in the Eureka Reformed Church with the Rev. D.E. Bosma officiating and burial at the city cemetery . Straub's assisted. Martha Strobel was born in McPherson County, Feb. 15, 1901, the daughter of Jacob and Barbara nee Bieber, Strobel, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Jacob M. Hoff on Dec. 18, 1924 and together they farmed several miles southwest of Eureka until recently when they bought their Eureka home to spend their later and most restful years. Four children were born to them: Gertrude, Mrs. Wm. Kimm, Richard Hoff, Raymond Hoff, and Bernice, Mrs. Henry Oster, Jr. Three grandchildren also survive. She leaves also surviving her, four sisters and brothers: Dorothy, Mrs. Jacob Balliet; Emma, Mrs. Arthur Hausauer; Bertha, Mrs. Jacob Teske; Mathilda, Mrs. John Todd; Walter, Arthur and Elmer Strobel. A kind, considerate and loving wife and mother, she was also highly respected in the entire community. Many relatives and friends will miss her companionship, whose heartfelt sympathy is with the bereaved family, Rev. Bosma mentioned in his sermon.
