Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron, with Pastor Steve Jewett officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery at Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through carlsenfuneralhome.com. Martha Violet McDougall was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Edward J. and Lyda M. (Lawrence) McDougall. She attended school in Westfield. She was united in marriage to Ronald Burke on Sept. 16, 1940, in Dakota City, Neb. They lived in Westfield for most of their life, except during World War II, when they lived in Washington State for a short time. Early on in their marriage, Martha was a homemaker for her family. Later, she went to work for Otis Radio in Hawarden, Iowa, for several years, until retiring. Ronald passed away Aug. 9, 1997. Martha continued to live at their home in Westfield until October 2006, when she became a resident of the Akron Care Center. Martha was a former member of the Westfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Westfield, where she served as church treasurer, and was active in bible study and the ladies aide. Most recently, she was a member of New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron. Martha enjoyed her times at the Akron Senior Center. Martha loved the outdoors, especially her vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her two children, Patricia Parnell of Liberal, Kan., and Michael Burke (Deb) of Waterloo, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Vi Lilly of Akron, Iowa; two brothers, Donald McDougall (Marge) of Tucson, Ariz., and Robert "Jim" McDougall (Betty) of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Anita MacDicken (Ken) of Snohomish, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ronald; and two sisters, Gilberta Olson and Dorothy Lease.
