From the Claflin Leader, March 29, 1894 -- M.A. Dowse established his shop here about three years ago, and his trade has been increasing ever since. Last year Mr. Dowse built a two story residence and shop, which he moved into the first of this year. His shop will compare in size and elegance with any meat market in the county. In 1898 Mr. Dowse is the only ice dealer in Claflin. From the Claflin Clarion, July 5, 1900-- M.A. Dowse was the first to put new wheat on the Claflin market, having threshed two hundred and fifty bushels today. He was the first to begin cutting as he also was when it came to threshing... will make between twenty-five and thirty bushels per acre, and sold on the market for 58 cents. The crop was grown on an 80 acre farm near town... June 13, 1901 -- M.A. Dowse has begun the erection of a new barn on his hotel property. August 9, 1906 -- M. A. Dowse has moved the city meat market into his building on the east side of Main. The new location has been thoroughly renovated, new fixtures added, and fixed up until Claflin can now boast of the cleanest, neatest, and most up to date establishment devoted to this line of business to be found in this section... April 21, 1910 -- Mrs. Hasten of Yates Center was here last week and rented the Dowse Hotel. She will take charge as soon as the Dowse family can make complete arrangements to move to the farm in Woodson county, which will probably be about the first of the month. May 10, 1910 -- Erma and Ida Dowse left Sunday morning for their new home near Rose, Kansas. The balance of the family had gone the week before. The Barton County Democrat, April 7, 1911 -- The Clarion has several times in the past predicted the the MA Dowse family would soon be coming back to Chaflin to make their home, and such is to be the case. Mr. Dowse was here last week and closed on a deal whereby he has leased the Cottage House, with the privilege of buying same anytime within the next six months, which means that the sale will be made as soon as Mr. Dowse disposes of his holdings in the eastern part of the state. He takes possession of the house the first of the month, and just as soon as the needed repairs can be made and the family can get here, the house will be again opened up as a first class hotel.
