COBLENTZ, one of the well known and progressive agriculturists of Middletown District, was born on the farm that he now owns, November 12, 1849. He is a son Henry and Ann Magdalena (Routzahn) Coblentz. The American progenitor of the Coblentz family was Herman Coblentz, the great-grandfather of Martin C. Coblentz. He was reared on a farm, and was educated in public and private schools. He has spent most of his life following the occupation of a farmer, the duties of which he learned as a boy at home. He is the possessor of two fine farms, of good land and well improved. One of these, containing 170 acres, being the one purchased of his father, is known as "Rose Hill", and it is here he resides. The other tract contains 150 acres, and is situated one mile north of his home place. He has been very successful in the management of these farms, and is highly esteemed by the community in which he lives. Mr. Coblentz has been interested in other enterprises besides the conduct of his farms. He was for many years a director in the Grangers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Frederick County, and in 1907, upon the organization of the People's Fire Insurance Company of Frederick County, he became one of the directors. He is a stockholder also in the Valley Savings Bank of Middletown, one of the county's well known financial institutions. Mr. Coblentz is affiliated with the Democratic party in political belief, and, although he has never sought public office, has served for many years as a school trustee. He is an active and devout member of the Reformed Church of Middletown, in which he has served in official capacities, having acted as deacon, and for many years elder; he has represented his congregation in the Maryland classis of the Potomac Synod. Mr. Coblentz was married January 20, 1873, to Ellen F. Brandenburg, daughter of Daniel and Lydia A. (Remsburg) Brandenburg, members of an old and highly respected family of Middletown Valley. They are the parents of seven children namely: William H., died in childhood; Walter C., Anna R. and Victor C., and died in childhood from diphtheria within five days; Albert Martin, was born February 25, 1883, is teller in the Valley Savings Bank of Middletown; Maurice Daniel, was born October 17, 1885, is a farmer on one his father's farms; and Lizzie Adeline, resides at home.
