About two miles away, on the east bank of the Des Moines river, Martin Coonan had built a log cabin in 1858, and in 1865 he hauled the brick left over from the Paoli court house and built a 16x24 foot, two-stories-high brick structure, with his old cabin as a lean-to. This became a sort of "house by the side of the road", one where passing travelers found a ready welcome. In hauling the brick, Coonan made quite a road and so he appropriated the name that still clung to the old abandoned town of stakes, and lettered Emmetsburg on signs pointing to his place. In 1868 Pond's sawmill was located on the river nearby and the next year store and other buildings were constructed. Then came the Milwaukee railroad. The survey located a depot and town plat on land owned by Austin Corbin and John Lawler about two miles southeast of Emmetsburg No. 2 and about two and a half miles northwest of erstwhile Paoli. Coonan's Emmetsburg did not take kindly to the railroad townsite but boosters for the latter finally won out, upon which Emmetsburg, name and all, moved to the new location, and the old river bank settlement faded into the limbo of "ghost towns".
