Description	:	William was the son of Martin and Catherine Coonan. He married Mary Roach on Nov 31, 1888 at Whittemore, IA. They were the parents of Thomas J, William F. and Madeline J. August 13, 1924 - Emmetsburg Democrat - Thursday evening W.H. Coonan, whose serious condition was reported in the last issue of the Democrat, passed away at his home in this city after an illness of four days. Coonan, whose serious condition was reported in the last issue of the Democrat, passed away at his home in this city after an illness of four days. Some time Sunday night he received a stroke of Paralysis. In the morning Mrs Coonan found him unconscious but he seemed to realize what was going on about him. He never spoke, although at times his condition seemed rather hopeful. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon. Services were conducted at St. Thomas' church, Rev. M. McNerney, the pastor, celebrating a requim high mass. Burial was in St Johns cemetery. Mr. Coonan was born on the present location of Riverdale northwest of where his parents, Mr and Mrs Martin Coonan, located in 1858. He was united in marriage at Whittemore, Nov 31, 1888, to Miss Mary Roach, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Michael Roach. Mr and Mrs Coonan subsequently made their permanent home in Emmetsburg. Mr Coonan is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. The sons are Thomas J of Asheville, NC and W.A. who is at present writing insurance in eastern Iowa. The only daughter is Mrs Roy Ryan of this city. All were present at the funeral excetp T.J. who could not come. Mr Coonan was an unassuming, even tempered, generous, warm hearted gentleman and he had hosts of devoted friends. He was known well by the first sttlers of our county and he grew up in the enjoyment of their ardent friendship. He was a competetent judge of men and their motives and he was capable of passing with a a fair degree of accuracy on their professions. Mr Coonan was economical and was careful in his business affairs. He built a comfortable, substantial home for his wife and family. He gave his sons and daughter the best of opportunities and he took the pardonable pride of a fond father in their attainments. ... Mr Coonan is the last, but one, of a large family which 66 years ago and during subsequent decades was known and appreciated in several states for the open hearted and self sacrificing hospitality of its members. M.F. Coonan, the eldest and only survivor of several brothers, now a gentleman of 75, feels keenly the loss that he has sustained in the death of the youngest member of the family - one to whom he was always closely and affectionately attached. The devoted wife and worthy sons and the daughter have the heart felt sympathy of our citizens as a whole and many in distant places in the great sorrow that has come to them.
