McKIM The sudden death of Martin McKim was a great shock to his wife, sisters, and brother, also to the other kindred and to the great number of people in and about Lamoni who knew him, and held him in high esteem and honor. He had lived here for thirty-nine years and was a well-known farmer and businessman, a man of good influence, and active in the affairs of life, toiling successfully and honestly to make a home and competence for his later years of life. On September 22d, a swelling began in one of his knees and it increased so that a week later it was decided to take him to a hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. There blood poisoning developed and the result was his death on October 10th, at 8 o'clock p.m. All that medical skill seemed to be able to do and under the constant care of his wife and sister, nothing availed and the end came quickly. His age was 62 years, 10 months, and 7 days. On Saturday the bereaved wife and his three sisters, Mrs. Dobsin, Mrs. Bell, and Mrs. McCormack, also Mr. McCormack, came with the body to Lamoni, and on Monday afternoon the funeral was held at the McKim residence, two miles northwest of town. There was a very large gathering of the people dwelling in Lamoni and from east, west, north, and south, he had been so widely known. R.A. Ballentine had charge of the services, and H. A. Stebbins preached the sermon. Mr. McKim was born near Deloit, Iowa, December 3, 1866, a son of John and Rebecca McKim. The family came to Lamoni in 1880. On June 12, 1907, he married Miss Etta Moon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.0. Moon. A child was born May 10, 1909, named Wilford Ross, but he died September 17, 1909, at the age of tour months and sixteen days. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery in the presence of a large number of people.
