He was raised in the Keokuk County area and graduated from Fremont High School in 1931. He worked for local farmers until his marriage. He married Florence Ritter on Jan. 17, 1935 in Des Moines. He was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hedrick. He is survived by his wife, Florence; a son Jerry; a daughter, Joy Murphy; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Neal Rice; and two sisters, Evelyn Fleming and Marie Hibler. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Dwight Ervin; a sister, Margaret Phillips; and a brother, Harold Rice. Burial will be in Abel Cemetery near Hedrick.
