He was converted and united with the Baptist church early in life. In later years he affiliated with the Methodist church. He was a faithful Sunday School and Church worker, being an official member and liberal supporter. He was a civil war veteran. He enlisted October 17, 1863 in the 12th Ohio cavalry. Kays, the son of Daniel and Martin(sic) Kays was born on August 1, 1844 at Guernsey County, Ohio. He was converted and united with the Baptist church early in life. In later years he affiliated with the Methodist church. He was a faithful Sunday School and Church worker, being an official member and liberal supporter. He was a civil war veteran. He enlisted October 17, 1863 in the 12th Ohio cavalry. He was honorably discharged November 14, 1865 at Nashville, Tenn. On December 16th, 1866 he was married to Caroline B. Slaysor. To this union ten children were born, six of whom are living, and were with him during his illness and death. He located in Crawford County, Kansas in 1873, living in different localities until his death at Monmouth, July 12th, 1922, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 14 days. He is survived by his wife, six children, two brothers, three sisters, fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The children are Wm. G. Kays of Girard, Mrs. R.L. McClure and Mrs. F.O. Mason of McCune, Mrs. W.D. Walker and Dr. H.E. Kays of Pittsburg and Mrs. P.W. Brown of Monmouth. Contributed by Cheryl White
