Martin Gundlach lives to age 88, dying in 1909. * * * * FAYETTE COUNTY PIONEER CALLED Martin Johan Christoff Gundlach was born in Wendorf, Mecklenburg Schwerin, Germany, Feb. 10, 1821, died Feb 16, 1909 leaving his age 88 years and 6 days. He recieved his education in the public schools of Germany. At the age of 14 he was confirmed and taken into full membership with the Evangelical Lutheran church. At Wismar he learned the trade of his father, that of a weaver which occupation he followed until his emigration to America. In 1847 he was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Seedorf. They located in Warin and resided there until 1845 when they left the "Fatherland" to organize a home in the "New World". They lived in Dayton, Michigan for one year coming to Iowa with his brothers John and Christian in the autumn of 1865 each selecting a quarter section of government land in section 81 Putnam township, Fayette county. Martin and his wife located on the south east one-fourth where he has kept an unbroken residence all these years. His wife died Feb. 12, 1861 leaving him with a family of small children. With heavy responsibility he remained true to her memory and for 48 years has cherished it as a sacred trust. Mr. Gundlach was one of the first settlers of Fayette county and can remember when the country around about was in the primitive condition, not a furrow having been turned or an improvement made, and with the history and the up building and the development of the country he has been identified. On beginning life in this country his home was a log cabin, which is still standing on the spot where it was first built, but for many years a more commodius residence, supplied with all the comforts of life has been his abode. In the death of Martin Gundlach Fayette county loses one of her most respected citizens as well as one of her oldest. He was the father of five children, two daughters dying in infancy. He leaves to mourn his loss two daughters, Mrs. Mary Scharff and Mrs. Louse Pagels and an only son William C. with whom he has made his home the last sixteen years, besides twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of friends. The formal services were conducted at the home and from the Baptist church in Aurora, Friday, Feb. 19,1909. Rev. E.F. Bogoss, of Des Moines, a special friend of the deceased and of the family, preaching the sermon. The body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in Madison Cemetery.
