Gundlach William Christian, son of Martin and Sophia Gundlach, was born September 17, 1857, in Putnam Township, Fayette County, Iowa. June 22, 1932 he suffered a stroke from which he did not fully recover. He has been in failing health until his passing May 5, 1942, having reached the ge of 84 years, 7 months and 18 days. He spent his entire life in Fayette county, Iowa, living on the farm of his birth until November 1920 when he retired from active farming to live in Oelwein for the remaining years of his life. On January 16, 1881, he was united in marriage with Fannie May Shambaugh of Arlington, Iowa, who was his faithful companion and helpmate until her death August 16, 1940. Seven children came to bless their home. Besides his wife, four of these children, an infant son, the oldest son Charles Martin, two daughters Rose Elizabeth and Mrs. Mildred Scharff preceded him. He was a man of good character, honest and upright in all his dealings, a loving and kind hearted husband and father. The affection and consideration extended to him during his life expresses the esteem in which he was held. When an infant he was christened in the Lutheran church, the faith of his parents. When a young man he received the rite of baptism by a minister of the Drunkard Brotherhood. Following the teachings of Jesus he extended a brotherly feeling and love to all. He leaves to mourn, one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Stapel of Oelwein with whom he made his home, two sons W. Scott who resides on the home farm, and Grover C. of Los Angeles, California, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives, many neighbors and friends. He was the last of his father's family. His parents, sisters Mrs. Mary Scharff, Mrs. Louise Pieplow-Pagel and half brother Frederick Seedorff having gone to their rest many years ago. Funeral services were held from Brant Funeral Home Friday p.m. May 8, 1942, To Union Church in Putnam Township. Dewey C. Kooy, pastor of the Christian church officiating. Music by ladies Quartet. Mrs. E. N. Bunning, Mrs. L. E. Brigham, Mrs. Lee King and Mrs. Verle Jenkins. Organist Mrs. Rex Kirkpatrick. Casketbearers were nephews of the deceased, Fred Pieplow, Henry Pieplow, Irvin Scharff, Albert Seedorff, Ed Pagel and Melvin Buree. Mrs Vesta Stuckman, Mrs. Alice Burnside, Mrs. Gladys Wine and Mrs. Irene Silka cared for the flowers. He was laid to rest in the Union Cemetery beside his wife, sons and daughters who are sleeping there.--Con., Oelwein Register (Obit from the Arlington News May 14, 1942, page 1)
