He was born the second son of George Irving and Elizabeth Riley, near Skidmore, Mo. on Feb 16, 1889. His father died when he was a lad of 16, and he had heavy responsibilities helping his mother care for the home. In this neighborhood, he grew to manhood, and attended the Salem and Eureka district schools. His mother died in 1929. He was united in marriage to Miss Mae McLaughlin Aug 8, 1910. To this union was born 3 sons, Arthur Lawrence, Maitland, Ralph Irvin and Ray Lewis of the home and one daughter, Opal Irene, of the home. At present Ray is in the st. Joseph hospital, Centerville, Ia. because of injuries received in the same accident in which his father was killed. Two brothers preceded him in death, Claude in 1905 and Guy in infancy. There are three sisters, Mrs. William Trimmer, Maitland, Mo., Mrs. Frank Burke, Stewartsville, Mo., and Mrs. George Hammond, St. Joseph, Mo. The one brother, George Oto is Supt. of the high school in Brinson, Mo. Mr. Riley grew up on the farm; for some five years he was in business in Skidmore, Mo. Since 1924, Maitland, Mo., has been the home of the family. Mr. riley, as an upright and courteous gentleman, a true friend and neighbor, had been for 17 years a busy trucker, ready to serve the public. The wife and children, 3 sisters, and a brother, his friends and neighbors mourn his untimely death at the age of 46 years, 10 months, and 24 days. The pallbearers were Vernon Ward, Ernest Carter, Jess McDonald, Ralph Debord, Robert Duncan and Edgar Kneale. The funeral service, very widely attended was held Sunday afternoon, in the Methodist Church, in charge of the Campbell funeral Home, conducted by Rev. G.H. Woestemeyer, and burial was in the K of P Cemetery. Martin Riley, Killed In Truck-Train Crash- Martin Riley, Maitland trucker for the Red and White stores was killed about noon, Thursday near Seymour, IA, when the truck which he was driving was struck by a train. His son, Ray, who had accompanied him on the trip to Iowa was severely bruised and both legs broken, however his condition was not considered critical. The cab part of the truck was very nearly demolished According to reports, Mr. Riley was familiar with the road near Seymour as it is on his route which he made several times each week. The railroad and highway run nearly parallel out of Seymour for several miles before intersecting, and good visibility is possible for a good distance. However, it is thought the cab of his truck obstructed the view, and Mr. Riley, thinking the train was not due at that time failed to notice its approach. The body was being sent to Maitland, where funeral arrangements will be made later. Mr. Riley was born and raised on a farm northwest of Skidmore.
