Description	:	Martin Travis Verhage, son of Merrill G. and Deborah Cowins Verhage, was born on May 27, 1979, at Geneva, and departed this life at Bryan Memorial Hospital on August 20, 1986, after a three month illness. He was 7 years, 2 months and 23 days old. He was the youngest of four children. Marty resided with his family in Fairmont all of his life. Read More	Martin Travis Verhage, son of Merrill G. and Deborah Cowins Verhage, was born on May 27, 1979, at Geneva, and departed this life at Bryan Memorial Hospital on August 20, 1986, after a three month illness. He was 7 years, 2 months and 23 days old. He was the youngest of four children. Marty resided with his family in Fairmont all of his life. Until his illness, Marty was a very energetic boy, who was blessed with a natural curiosity and a desire to take a new challenge. He enjoyed immensely the hours spent with his family--fishing, riding the boat, playing with his cars, and his cat, Toby. He loved to ride his three-wheeler down the driveway with his hair blowing in the wind. Marty enjoyed school and was a good student. He had completed the first grade at Fairmont Public School. He liked to be a "big boy" and walk home instead of riding the bus. He showed strength and bravery as he struggled with his illness. He will always be remembered by his loving family as the little red haired angel with the magic smile that walked among them far too short a time. Marty is survived by his parents, Merrill and Debbie Verhage; brothers, Kendell and Randell; sister, Amy, all of them at home; grandmothers, Lena Heyen of Fairmont and Marcia Blair of Downs, Ks.; great-grandmother, Louise Lessenden of Topeka, Ks., and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church, Fairmont, on Saturday, August 23, with the Rev. Kauble and Rassmunson officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied Mr. and Mrs. John Linn, who sang "In His Time," "Open the Door for the Children" and "Jesus Love Me." Pallbearers were Greg Cowins, Dr. Carroll Verhage, Wendell Verhage, Pet Cowins, Virgil Verhage and Richard Wehland. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Henderson and Kenneth Weber. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery. Nebraska Signal August 28th, 1986 page 6.
