Read More	Merrill Glenn Verhage was born to Martin Jacob Verhage and Marcia Lucille Lessenden Verhage on March 1, 1944, at Beloit, Kan. He passed away on April 30, 2005 at Bryan/LGH East Medical Center at the age of 61 years, one month and 30 days. He was one of 11 children in the family. Merrill lived with his family in rural Jewell County, Kan., where he attended Chandler School through eighth grade and graduated from Downs High School in Downs, Kansas in 1962. As a child, Merrill attended and was baptized at Dispatch Christian Reformed Church in Jewell County, Kansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May of 1962. He was a diesel mechanic and was stationed most of his enlistment on the USS Holland, AS32, a submarine tender ported in Rota, Spain. His twin brother, Carroll, served on the same ship at the same time. Merrill was honorably discharged from active service in July of 1966. After his military duty, Merrill lived in Geneva and worked with his brother, Virgil, in construction. He married Deborah Ann Cowins on December 15, 1967. This union was blessed with five children. Merrill and Debbie lived in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa while Merrill got started in agricultural construction. They moved to Fairmont in 1969, and started M & D Verhage & Sons Construction. In 1979, Merrill and Deb built a home just north of Fairmont where Debbie continues to live. Merrill and Debbie were associated with Arbor Drive Baptist Church in York. Merrill had numerous interests and loved outdoor activities. He restored and pulled John Deere tractors, winning numerous trophies. He gardened and canned much of the produce. He liked to cook, making delicious soups and holiday dinners. He took his family camping and fishing at area lakes and enjoyed taking his family--especially his grandchildren for boat rides. Mornings would find Merrill at the Tower Cafe having coffee with the guys. Merrill was a friend to everyone he met, and knew most everyone in the community. He was a Master Mason in Geneva Lodge No. 79 of Geneva. Merrill enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Marcia Verhage; one son, Martin Travis; and one brother, Virgil Martin of Geneva. Merrill is survived by his wife, Deborah, at home; three sons, Kendell Allen, grandchildren McKayla, Kurstan and Kain of McCool Junction; Randell Glenn, grandchildren, Tanya, Brooklin and Dakota of Fairmont; K.J. at home; and one daughter, Amelia (Amy) Tol and husband, Jimmy and granddogs, Yukon and Wiggles and grandcat, Kinker of Fairmont. He is also survived by brothers, John of Jacksonville, Texas, Richard of Cawker City, Kan., Lloyd of Manhatten, Kansas, Carroll of Geneva, David of Crawford and Wendell of Hastings. Surviving sisters include Louise Wallace of Luray, Kansas, Marianne Henderson of Talala, Oklahoma and Lucille Weber of Smith Center, Kansas; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church in Geneva on Tuesday, May 3, with Rev. Pat Kelley and Rev. Keith Bateman officiating. Susan Kleinschmidt provided prelude and postlude music. Karl Brinkman accompanied himself on guitar and sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Daddy's Hands" and "Untitled Hymn (Come to Jesus)." Casket bearers were James Tol, Jaime Betran, Luis Canizales, Gonzalo Cervantes, Javier Cervantes and Rogelio Ontiverous. Military graveside services were provided by the Fairmont American Legion and Masonic rites were provided by the Geneva Masonic Lodge No. 79. Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery.
